چکیده

New computer applications, such as the infamous “Napster” system enable the sharing of music over the Internet, with limited communication around this sharing of music. This paper discusses the use and opportunities for these music sharing technologies using interviews with users of both conventional and new music sharing technologies. The data show that music sharing is a practice that is richly linked with other social activities. New music is often discovered through friends, by listening to music together, or in the form of compilation tapes. In these environments, sharing music is a natural activity. With music sharing over the Internet, however, much of this social context is removed. This suggests opportunities to turn music sharing into a more collaborative and community-related activity. These opportunities are explored with the “Music Buddy”, a system for browsing others’ music collections without infringing the copyright of artists.

Computer musicking : designing for collaborative digital musical interaction

This thesis is about the design of software which enables groups of people to make music together. Networked musical interaction has been an important aspect of Sound and Music Computing research since the early days, although collaborative music software has yet to gain mainstream popularity, and there is currently limited research on the design of such interfaces. This thesis draws on researc...

Collaborative music interaction on tabletops: an HCI approach

With the advent of tabletop interaction, collaborative activities are better supported than they are on single-user PCs because there exists a physical shareable space, and interaction with digital data is more embodied and social. In sound and music computing, collaborative music making has traditionally been done using interconnected networks, but using separated computers. Musical tabletops ...

Challenges and New Directions for Collaborative Live Coding in the Classroom

This paper focuses on the potential of collaborative live coding in educational settings. In particular, it draws from our experience with EarSketch, a free online platform for algorithmic composition and computational music remixing that allows students to learn Computer Science Principles (CSP) by making music using either Python or JavaScript. We argue that collaborative live coding is a pro...

Communication, Control, and State Sharing in Collaborative Live Coding

In the setting of collaborative live coding, there emerges a number of issues: (1) the need for communication, (2) issues of conflicts in sharing program state space, and (3) remote control of code execution. This paper proposes solutions to these problems. In the recent extension of UrMus a programming environment for mobile music application developmentwe introduce a paradigm of shared and in...
